Early Warning Signs of Vein Problems

Do any of your family members suffer from varicose veins? If so, it’s a good idea to be on the lookout for tell-tale signs that you might be developing them. Almost 50% of varicose vein patients report having a family history of varicose veins, and while genetics play a role in their development, varicose veins can affect anyone at any time.

So, who is at risk of developing these achy, rope-like veins?

As I mentioned above, anyone with a family history of varicose veins has a higher risk of developing them. Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do about your genetics, but knowing you have a family history of vein issues can help you be more proactive with your vein health.

Age is also a factor in developing varicose veins. As you get older, the valves in your leg veins can weaken naturally. As these valves weaken, blood can pool in your legs leading to varicose veins.

If you spend a lot of time sitting or standing in the same spot all day then your chances of developing varicose veins are higher. If you aren’t moving your legs regularly, pressure can build in your veins. Likewise, if you are carrying too much body weight there will be added pressure on your leg veins. Any added pressure can weaken the veins in your legs and lead to varicose veins.

Even if you don’t relate to any of these risk factors, it’s still a great idea to be proactive about your health and know the signs of the development of varicose veins. Here are some things to look for:

Swollen feet or ankles: If you find yourself regularly dealing with swollen feet or ankles you could be seeing an early warning sign of varicose veins.

Itching around your feet and ankles: Venous Stasis Dermatitis is caused when pressure builds in your legs and not enough blood and oxygen reaches your skin. Added pressure in your legs means added risk for varicose veins.

Achy, heavy legs: If your legs regularly feel achy or heavy, apart from exercise or physical activity, varicose veins could be the culprit.

Being proactive about your health means paying attention to your body and seeking professional help. If you are experiencing any of the warning signs of varicose veins, contact Vein Expert Dr. Wenger, at (423) 472-5423 or click here to request an appointment online.
