Spider Veins

Many people who suffer from the aches and pains of varicose veins are not hesitant to seek treatment. This venous disease can be quite uncomfortable and the thick, ropelike veins are hard to ignore. But what about spider veins? Is there an option to treat or remove these smaller, more thread-like veins?

Spider veins are web-like capillary veins, usually red, blue or purple in color, that are smaller and closer to the surface of the skin than varicose veins. Common factors that can lead to the development of spider veins are genetics, age, sitting or standing for extended periods of time, extra body weight, and hormones. Spider veins, also known as telangiectasias, can sometimes cause discomfort, but are not commonly painful like varicose veins.

Because spider veins are generally considered to be a cosmetic issue, you might be hesitant to seek treatment, but it would be wise to consult with Vein Specialist Dr. Eston Wenger of Premier Surgical Cleveland. Spider veins could be an indication of more serious issues and a venous ultrasound might be needed to determine the overall health of your veins.

If you are ready to do something about your spider veins you have options for treatment! Dr. Wenger might advise you to wear compression stocking which will improve blood flow in your legs by applying pressure. These stockings can help prevent more spider veins from forming, but won’t be a cure for your spider veins.

To be rid of your spider veins, you will need a treatment like Sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is a minimally-invasive procedure in which a liquid or foam substance is injected into the spider veins. This liquid causes the spider vein to collapse and eventually be reabsorbed by your body. This is an excellent option for spider veins because sclerotherapy is a safe and quick outpatient procedure that causes minimal discomfort.

To learn if sclerotherapy could be the right treatment for your spider veins, contact Dr. Eston Wenger to set up an appointment. Give Dr. Eston Wenger a call at Premier Surgical Associates of Cleveland, TN, at (423) 472-5423 or click here to request an appointment online.
