The Importance of a Healthy Circulatory System

Have you ever thought about the role your circulatory system plays in your overall health and wellbeing? Maybe not; especially if you aren’t having any noticeable issues. But if you suffer from varicose veins, it’s a good idea to understand what is going on in you body and how the weakened valves in you leg veins are causing issues for your circulatory system.

Your heart, arteries, capillaries and, you guessed it, veins all make up your circulatory system. Blood is pumped from your heart to your lungs where carbon dioxide is removed and oxygen is picked up. The blood is then pumped to the left side of your heart, into your arteries and then through your capillaries where it delivers oxygen and nutrients to your organs and tissues and picks up carbon dioxide. Now that your blood is depleted of oxygen, it must make its way back up to your heart to continue the cycle. How does the blood get back up to your heart? Through your veins, of course!

When your circulatory system is working properly, your organs and tissues receive the oxygen they need. So, you can see how important your circulatory system is! But how do varicose veins play into this system? Varicose veins occur when the valves in your leg veins weaken and blood cannot flow back up to your heart. When the valves in your leg fail, a back pressure is created that leads to blood pooling in your legs and feet, swelling, pain and unsightly varicose veins.
These cordlike veins aren’t just a painful nuisance, they are an issue for your circulatory system!

The good news is that your blood can be rerouted through other, healthy veins through an outpatient procedure like VenaSeal, Endovenous Ablation, Radiofrequency Ablation, Sclerotherapy, or Microphlebectomy. These procedures are minimally invasive, have a quick recovery time, and are usually covered by insurance.

If you suffer from varicose veins and your circulatory system isn’t functioning at its best, it’s time to see a vein specialist.
