What are leg ulcers?

Varicose veins can be a painful indication of a more serious issue: damaged valves in your leg veins. This issue can become serious enough that if left untreated, another painful issue can arise called venous skin ulcers. Venous skin ulcers, also known as leg ulcers, are another indication that it’s time to see a Vascular/ vein specialist.

But how do leg ulcers come about? When the valves in your leg veins are damaged, or stop functioning properly, the blood that should be pumped back up to your heart can begin to pool in your legs. As this blood pools, the tissue in your legs, especially around your ankles, can start to break down, leading to an open skin sore known as an ulcer. Because of the additional increase of blood pressure around these ulcers, they can be difficult to heal.

Leg ulcers can be itchy or burn and are often accompanied by swelling around the affected area. There may also be discoloration or a rash surrounding the area or fluid or pus that oozes from the ulcer. Infection of the ulcer can be a concern, especially because they are difficult to heal so it is important to take steps to help them heal.

If you are experiencing leg ulcers, your doctor may tell you to keep the affected area clean and avoid products that can irritate the ulcer. Wearing compression stockings, keeping your legs elevated at night, and decreasing your salt intake can all be ways to help your ulcers heal. Other ways to help prevent these ulcers include losing weight and exercising regularly.

Healing your leg ulcers will take time. Taking minor steps can make a big difference, but the best course of action is to see a vein specialist to find a treatment plan for your specific needs, especially if your leg ulcers are cause by vein issues.
