Holiday Travel and Vein Care

It’s that time of year again, time for holiday travel! Traveling can always be a bit hectic, so it’s important to keep in mind and practice a few easy ways to take care of your vein health along the way. Dr. Eston Wenger of Premier Surgical in Cleveland shares some favorite tips to help keep your veins functioning well as you travel over the rivers and through the woods.

Stretch. Before getting on a plane, train or automobile, it’s helpful to stretch your legs and reduce excess strain put on them so they can more easily pump blood back up to your heart. There are many simple stretches that improve circulation, regulate blood flow, take pressure off your veins, and reduce the aches and pains that come with varicose veins. You’re sure to notice a difference if you put this tip into practice.

Move. Long trips can mean hours of sitting in the same position. Be sure to stay active, even while traveling. If you are flying, get out of your seat and walk up and down the aisle a few times to get your blood flowing. On road trips, be sure to get out of the vehicle when stopping for gas and walk around and stretch. Make a plan to strop frequently so your blood doesn’t begin to pool in your legs and add pressure to your veins. If you’re unable to get up and move, try doing some frequent calf exercises while you’re seated; anything that will get your blood flowing will be helpful.

Hydrate. We can’t stress this enough – drink plenty of water! Staying properly hydrated will keep your blood thin which aids in circulation. And avoid drinks that can lead to dehydration like alcohol and caffeinated drinks.

Pack healthy, low sodium snacks. It’s so tempting to raid the gas station before a big trip, but those salty snacks are no friends to your veins. If you’re able, pack some healthy, delicious snacks to eat along the way. A small cooler is perfect for a road trip, so load up on all of your low sodium favorites.

Have fun! The holidays are so much more fun when you feel good. By taking a few simple steps of preparation, you can easily take care of your vein health while traveling and spend the time at your destination feeling good and having fun.
