What is Schlerotherapy?

If you have varicose or spider veins, you are not alone. Statistics show that over 40 million people in the US suffer from unhealthy veins. These varicose veins and spider veins can be painful and unsightly. But the good news is, you don’t have to continue to suffer, because there are safe, minimally invasive options for treatment.

In our last blog post we discussed Endovenous Ablation as one option for the treatment of varicose and spider veins. But today let’s learn more about Sclerotherapy.

Endovenous Ablation uses radiofrequencies to heat and shrink the walls of the unhealthy vein and is generally used as treatment when a deep varicose vein is accompanied by swelling, ulcers, and aches. Sclerotherapy, on the other hand, is more often used to treat smaller varicose veins and spider veins,

Sclerotherapy, while often used for cosmetic purposes, can also improve symptoms related to unhealthy veins such as aching, burning and swelling. During the non-surgical procedure, a solution called a sclerosant is injected into the vein with a fine needle. The solution irritates the lining of the vein; the vein then swells shut and the blood flow is blocked. And just like in Endovenous Ablation, the blood that once flowed through the unhealthy vein will find a new route through other, healthy veins. Sclerotherapy is a quick, safe, noninvasive procedure that does not require any anesthesia. Recovery time with Sclerotherapy is also minimal and regular activities can be resumed shortly after the procedure.

Both Endovenous Ablation and Sclerotherapy are safe, minimally invasive options for treatment with quick recovery times and high rates of success. But because treatment for vein issues is highly individualistic, the best way to know which treatment is right for you is by making an appointment with Vein Specialist Dr. Eston Wenger of Premier Surgical Associates in Cleveland, TN.
